Using a Dream Journal with Dream Recall

You wake up and you know you had a dream, and you have your dream journal right there on the night stand, but you can’t remember what the dream was about! You are so close but you just can’t tune it in. That’s ok, it is progress, do not get discouraged. Dream recall is a process that you are learning and your efforts are beginning to pay off.

Here is what you need to do, grab your pen and your dream journal. What? You don’t have a dream to write down? WRONG! Consistency is key when you are training, so write in your journal: I woke up feeling ____ and I know I had a dream, I can not reach the memory right now. This is so important because like we discussed you are in training, you are teaching yourself to get in tune with your dreams and in order to do that it requires commitment and consistency.

So, here we are the very next day and you remember some of your dream! Whoa! What now?! Remember to grab that dream journal! I personally have several dream journals, and I will tell you why this works for me and may work for you too. I keep a small notepad by my bedside, so that when I wake up I can just grab it and write some key things. Then as I continue about my morning rituals, I won’t forget them since I already wrote them down. I can look back at my notes later and pick up where I left off.

One of the biggest mistakes people make when they are working on dream recollection is thinking that they have to write down every detail of your dreams in novel form when you wake up. If you have the time to be a little more detailed that’s great, but we don’t always remember everything right away, and writing down key points in your dream journal is the way to go.

Later in the day, as you may have experienced in the past, something you see, hear, do, say or smell may trigger further dream recollection. Well, that trusty key word dream journal should be right there in your pocketbook, backpack, diaper bag, briefcase or back pocket! Jot it down! The second Dream Journal I keep is a much larger journal that details my dreams that I remember completely. In fact, I have many dream journals that are already filled up and every now and then I look back and it’s interesting to see how I have changed and what became of my dreams.
