Developing Dream Recall
Developing your ability to recall your dreams is essential when you are considering working with your dreams. Good news for the many of you out there that have difficulty recalling your dreams is that there are many techniques that you can use to enhance your dream recall. Remembering your dreams is the first step you must take because without remembering your dreams, there is nothing to work with.
Studies have shown with a reasonable degree of certainty that the subconscious mind responds well to suggestion as well as visualization. There are a few simple basic techniques that you can try:
Start when you’re ready to go to sleep, imagine yourself waking up in the morning remembering your dreams. Make this experience as visual and realistic as you possibly can. See yourself waking up in your bed, in your bedroom whatever your specific situation warrants. You are not only telling yourself that you will remember, you are walking yourself through what you expect your mind to do in a specific manner.
Another technique is to get yourself a full glass of water. Drink about half of the cup of water slowly before going to bed. Place the remaining glass of water on your night table. Now visualize yourself waking up in the morning and remembering your dreams as you are drinking the rest of the glass of water. As with other techniques what you will be doing is giving yourself a trigger for dream recall.
I have also read that some drink water before bed so as to cause themselves to have to wake up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and attempt dream recollection at that time.
Along that theory, there is also a technique that requires you to set your alarm clock to wake you up earlier this is an attempt to wake you up during REM sleep, which is the stage of sleep where you dream.
Another technique that is a little more detailed requires meditation for relaxation. What you do is bring yourself to a relaxed state and walk yourself visually through remembering your dream, some people, when they have mastered a technique of dream recall will use meditation to begin instructing themselves what they would like to dream about.
